Pima Model Yacht Club

RC yachtUpdate! Civano Micro Yachting Association is now Pima Model Yacht Club!

Attention Tucson offshore yacht competitors and cruising sailboat enthusiasts! Now that we have your attention, we must grammatically qualify several of the above adjectives. Offshore: anything in water and not on dirt. Yacht: anything that floats on water, has a point on one end (bow), and has the ability to catch moving air. Competitor: an individual who has something on the water that has a pointy end, a wind catcher, and thinks his something is faster than yours. Cruiser: any individual who elects to do as he pleases with his offshore pointy end wind catcher. Enthusiast: any individual who has any interest whatsoever in any of the above.

Micro yachting is a hobby/sport that has captured the hearts and interest of a fast-growing and enthusiastic population. The American Model Yachting Association recognizes a specific number of class-defined, radio-controlled, competitive micro yachts. These yachts compete here in Arizona, the U.S., and internationally.

Each of the relatively simple “yachts” adheres to strict construction guidelines. To maximize speed and appearance, however, individuals are given considerable latitude for mechanically customizing their two-channel, radio-controlled sailboats. The company of fellow yachting enthusiasts and watching your boat perform, racing or cruising, is the thrill of the sport.

If you have any interest in this fun and fast growing sport, you are invited to attend our meetings in the Civano Activity Center. There will be boats to look at and ample opportunity to discuss all aspects of boat construction, sailing, and, racing. No prior sailing or model construction experience is necessary. Members of other AMYA sailing clubs are enthusiastically invited.

Please bring your pointy end wind catcher. For more information contact Jerry Walker at jerrywalker3@gmail.com or 520-760-7794 or Bill Brown at wmmb1231@cox.net.

Directions to the Activity Center: From Houghton Rd. at Civano Nursery (about ½ mile south of Irvington), take Seven Generations to the STOP sign. The Activity Center (round bldg.) is straight through the courtyard at that sign. You will see a sign near the street identifying the event. Park on street in the vicinity of the Stop sign, or take a right then a left for more street parking or take a left and then a quick right to the curve in the road; go straight ahead into the parking lot.
