Homes, art studios, and businesses within Civano – a neighborhood conceived in the last century (!) as a model for a sustainable community and originally envisioned as “Tucson’s Solar Community” – will be open to the public on Saturday, March 23, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Visitors must register (no charge) on the day of the event at the Civano Neighborhood Center located at 10501 E. Seven Generations Way, Tucson, AZ 85747, where they will receive a self-guided walking tour map.

With more than 50 local businesses thriving within Civano, several of them will have their workshops and studios open for tour visitors, along with a selection of private homes. The tour map will also have information on the location of different types of eco-friendly home construction, which can be viewed from the outside.

Come find out how one can live with less of a footprint on our Earth, and enjoy a wonderful day visiting our little community, off Houghton Road, near the corner of Irvington Road. Food and drinks will be available for sale.

Civano New Year’s Eve Party & Fundraiser a Resounding Success!

Thank you for joining Civano neighbors and friends for dessert, music (live DJ) and dancing, raffle prizes, and a great time to ring in the 2013! $10 bought adults a new stemless or purple-stemmed Civano wine glass, plus two grand prize raffle tickets. Additional glasses are available for purchase at $8 each or four for $30. Contact Geno or Diane at 520.975.7447 to purchase your glasses.

Participants enjoyed the shotgun raffle for great prizes from local artisans and other businesses. All proceeds, totaling just under $1,000, benefited Civano Neighbors neighborhood association.

Civano and Sierra Morado Bus (Shuttle) Service Began December 3rd!

Bus service for Southeast Tucson/ Rita Ranch will start on Monday December 3! Sun Shuttle Route 450 will serve many locations including:

Santa Rita High School
Clements Center
Ward 4 Offices
Pima College East
Civano community
Sierra Morado community
Rita Ranch neighborhoods
UA Tech Park
Various shopping centers
Connections to multiple Sun Tran routes

It runs back and forth between the park and ride at Golf Links and Kolb and the UA Science and Technology Park, including through the middle of Civano and Sierra Morado. Please see the brochure for the route map, schedule, costs to ride, etc.:

“Bride and Prejudice” – Our Next Movie Night, Nov. 21

“Bride and Prejudice” is a 2004 romantic musical directed by G. Chadha. It is a Bollywood-style adaptation of Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice.” Filmed mostly in English with some Hindi/Punjab dialogue, it received generally favorable reviews by the critics. It should be just the thing to whet your appetite for Thanksgiving, the next day. Plan to attend our second neighborhood movie night, in the sumptuously appointed “garage” behind Mario’s house at 10466 E. Wayne Moody Lane. The film starts at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 21.

Memories in the Making Group Forming

Alzheimer’s: Learn More and Join a Support Group in Civano

Do you know the warning signs of Alzheimer’s?

The warning signs of Alzheimer’s disease are often dismissed as side effects of normal aging. If you or someone you know is experiencing memory loss or behavioral changes, perhaps it’s time to learn the facts.

Early detection can provide the opportunity to explore treatments that may provide some relief of symptoms and help maintain a level of independence longer. Early detection also allows more time to plan for the future and for taking part in decisions about care, living options, financial and legal matters, as well as building the right care team and social support network.

You are cordially invited to attend an interactive workshop, where you will learn about the ten warning signs of Alzheimer’s. The workshop will help to separate myth from reality and address commonly-held fears about Alzheimer’s in America. Hear from other people who have the disease and find out how to recognize the signs in yourself and others.

Are you caring for someone with Alzheimer’s?

If you are, then you already know that caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia is a difficult task. Alzheimer’s disease is life-changing for both those diagnosed and those close to them. Alzheimer’s symptoms grow worse over time, and there is no way to predict how quickly the disease will progress, or exactly how behavior will change.

The sooner you seek out and use supportive services, the longer you will be able to care for your loved one. An Alzheimer’s Caregiver Support Group, led by a trained facilitator, provides a safe place for caregivers, family, and friends of persons with dementia to connect with others who truly understand what you are going through.

You’ll be able to exchange practical information on care-giving problems and possible solutions. You’ll be able to talk through challenges and ways of coping. You’ll be able to share ideas, feelings, needs, and concerns with others who are supportive of what you are experiencing. You’ll also learn about where to find community resources and other support services.

If you are caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s and dementia, you are cordially invited to attend a new Alzheimer’s Caregivers Support Group that is starting up in Civano on Monday, October 1^st. The community is very grateful to Les Shipley, owner of the Civano Nursery, for providing a beautiful meeting space in the Civano Business Center.

Please note the following events and put them on your calendar, while understanding that there may be changes. It is useful to check the area bulletin boards and the Civano Neighbors Discussion Forum, as well as the CivanoNeighbors.com website, closer to the dates for final details. Events will take place in the Civano Neighborhood Center, except for the home tour.

Neighborhood Association Meetings

Be sure to check the bulletin boards or Forum for up-to-date information about location, time, and speaker. All meetings are scheduled for the Civano Middle School, located on Drexel at Nightbloom, across from the Civano Community School.

September 20, 2012—Regular meeting: Water Wise, with speaker Karen Cartwright, owner of Accurate Backflow. She will demonstrate the functions of a backflow valve and answer questions from the audience. Also, nominations will open for four positions on the Leadership Team: Association Spokesperson (President), Treasurer, and two At-Large Members.
November 15 is the election of new team leaders
February 21, and May 16 will be regular meetings.

Please note: Meetings will generally have interesting speakers on topics of concern to the Civano and Sierra Morado neighborhoods, and will be announced at a time closer to the date of the meeting.

First Thursday of each month is the regular meeting of the Leadership Team, and it is open to anyone who would like to attend. Meetings are held in the Civano activity center.

Civano Movie Group Goes Bollywood: 2012/2013 Schedule

A Taste of India is the theme for the 2012/2013 Civano Movie Nights, scheduled for the third Wednesday of the month beginning in October.

Dust off your Nehru jacket or dig out your bangle bracelets, and be sure to join the movie mavens on October 17th for the first in a series of movies made in or about India. Treats are always welcome and, for those adventurous in the kitchen, perhaps a recipe of Hyderabadi haleem. (Never mind, I just wanted to show off that I could spell it.)

And there will be food! At the end of the series, a trip to a local Indian restaurant is planned. Spice up your life with the Civano Movie Group.

Civano Celebrates 4th of July with Annual Parade!

Thanks for the coordination of Mark Levine and other volunteers, the 12th annual Civano Independence Day parade took place on the morning of July 4th. The unseasonably cool and wet weather made for a great turnout — one of our largest batch of paraders so far — and while we didn’t have the drummers, kazooers, flutists, or other instrumentalists of years past, the boom box tied to Mark’s bike led the multigenerational group ably down the lush parade route.

The parade began at the Civano activity center, the beautiful, round adobe building located in the heart of the Civano neighborhood. Here, participants decorated their bicycles, scooters, wagons, dogs, and more. From there, paraders marched west on Seven Generations Boulevard nearly to the community’s entrance. They turned south on Thunder Sky, marched past the intersection with Civano Boulevard, and then marched east on Cerulean to the neighborhood’s south sports park and pool.

In addition to the temperate waters of the pool, paraders were greeted with refreshing watermelon, Eegee’s frozen drinks, and plenty of good company.
