Are you caring for someone with Alzheimer’s?

If you are, then you already know that caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia is a difficult task. Alzheimer’s disease is life-changing for both those diagnosed and those close to them. Alzheimer’s symptoms grow worse over time, and there is no way to predict how quickly the disease will progress, or exactly how behavior will change.

The sooner you seek out and use supportive services, the longer you will be able to care for your loved one. An Alzheimer’s Caregiver Support Group, led by a trained facilitator, provides a safe place for caregivers, family, and friends of persons with dementia to connect with others who truly understand what you are going through.

You’ll be able to exchange practical information on care-giving problems and possible solutions. You’ll be able to talk through challenges and ways of coping. You’ll be able to share ideas, feelings, needs, and concerns with others who are supportive of what you are experiencing. You’ll also learn about where to find community resources and other support services.

If you are caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s and dementia, you are cordially invited to attend a new Alzheimer’s Caregivers Support Group that is starting up in Civano on Monday, October 1st. The community is very grateful to Les Shipley, owner of the Civano Nursery, for providing a beautiful meeting space in the Civano Business Center.

Civano Neighbors General Meeting, featuring Michael Eng discussing Living in Community:

WANT TO AGE IN PLACE? - IT'S GONNA TAKE A COMMUNITY
Options and Opportunities for Rejuvenating 'Civano Neighbors' Living in Community Group

Are you like the 90% of people 65 and over who want to stay in their own home, in their own neighborhood, with the people and places they know and love throughout their senior years? The economy, declining government social services, the arrival of the huge "baby boomer" demographic bubble, and the unpredictability of the aging process itself can make it increasingly difficult to remain independently in your own home sweet home. You have to be able to take care of your home and yard; you need to be safe in your own home; and you have to be able to get around when you need to.

Here are a few statistics from a recent Administration on Aging report based on the 2010 Census:

Over half (55.1%) of non-institutionalized older Americans (65+) lived with their spouses. This figure include 69.9% of older men and 41.3% of older women.

By age 75+, however, only 30.4% of women were living with a spouse. Forty-seven percent of non-institutionalized women aged 75+ were living alone.

Approximately 4.1% of the 65+ population were living in an institutional setting. This percentage increases with age; 13.2% of those 85+ lived in an institutional setting.

Approximately 2.4% of the elderly lived in senior housing with at least one supportive service available to residents.

While there are many resources available to help people stay at home or to find the right place when home isn't a good option anymore, the information can be confusing. Most people want to stay at home and most people do stay at home. Staying at home safely and successfully, however, depends on what kind of planning they've done and what resources they've identified to make it successful.

Come hear about the research that the Aging in Community Group has been doing on new models for neighbors helping neighbors to support aging in place. Contribute your ideas for creating a new paradigm of neighborhood-based support services that engage the whole community in improving the health, wellness and quality of life for our older residents, while also enhancing social cohesion among residents of all ages.
