The Abbeyby Rich and Ann Bates

In keeping with the past review of “cheap eats,” we continue the theme of Happy Hours. The two featured for this month are at The Abbey and North.

The Abbey is located at 6060 E. Sunrise Drive, phone number is 299-3132, and it features a Bar Happy Hour from Tuesday – Saturday, 4 – 6, and again 8 – closing. This is offered all day Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to close.

Go for the food! Recommendations include mussels and fries ($11) that feature rock shrimp, chorizo, and lemon and herbs; “our” grilled cheese sandwich ($12) with whipped brie, sliced tomatoes, zucchini pesto, and greens; Ginny’s artichoke dip ($6) with shaved Parmesan, dill, and house bread. These are all served in ample portions.

Other recommendations would be: The Board ($11), a sampler platter with sweet corn hushpuppies ($3) with garden pepper jelly, and the baked brie Wellington($8) that features apricot marmalade, sliced apples, and pepitas. Salads, fries, and burgers range from $3 – 13.

Drinks range from $2 for beers to $6 for infusion cocktails. Come early as this place fills up quickly, or grab a spot in the outside dining area. Reservations are available. Best of all, The Abbey is not across town and so relatively “close by” our eastside.

NorthNorth is located at 2995 E. Skyline Drive on the east side of La Encantada, phone number is 299-1600 and features their Happy Hour from Monday – Friday, 3 – 6 p.m. (Note: no happy hours on the weekends.)

Personal favorites here include Zucca chips ($3), crispy calamari ($7), and any of their $6 pizzas. Other choices include bruschetta ($5) with prosciutto pesto and Parmesan; trio spreads ($6) which include Crescenza and extra virgin olive oil, hummus, and tapenade; and meatballs al Pomodoro ($5).

Well drinks are $4, beer is $2.50; infused cocktails are available from $4 – 6. This is our favorite place for, of all things, calamari. Amazing calamari!
